“I Guess I’m Lucky”: One Customer’s Low-Key Approach to Managing Incontinence With Confidence

Dan shares his story

My incontinence story is a pretty short and simple one. It started only four or five years ago. I simply stopped being able to hold my urge to urinate as long as I used to hold it and would end up wetting my pants.

I distinctly remember the first time it happened. I was on my way home from a meeting and still running errands. I had stopped at the post office to mail something and as I was standing at the self-service kiosk, the urge to pee came on and I couldn't control it. I started peeing my pants right there in the post office. Fortunately it was a Saturday afternoon so there weren't any witnesses at the post office; and, I was wearing dark trousers, so none of my neighbors saw the wet patch on my pants when I got home. I managed to get home and change into some dry clothes. After something similar to this happened a few more times, I started wearing protection in case I could not get to a toilet quick enough. None of my accidents involved witnesses, or if they did, nobody said anything.

I still wear protection most days and nights. Most days, I use the diaper. It doesn't mean that I get lazy and just go in the diaper; if I am near the toilet, I will use the toilet, but most days I find myself out and about and have the urge to pee followed by me releasing a good flow into my pants. Most nights, I wake up two or three times to urinate and usually I am able to get to the toilet quick enough to avoid leaks.

Otherwise, my life has continued as normal and nobody else knows I am incontinent. It doesn't bother me and I just look at it as part of the aging process. I guess I'm lucky, as I haven't really suffered and have only rarely encountered leaks.
